Sheridan School offers specialist therapeutic education for up to 60 young people aged 8-16 years with autism and/or SEMH difficulties (formally known as BESD).
The majority of our young people have conditions which have meant they have been unable to cope in mainstream schools. We offer specialist, smaller learning groups at both primary and secondary levels for students with a range of additional needs such as autism, post-traumatic stress disorder and attachment disorder.

Sheridan School aims to deliver the highest level of education tailored to individual needs in a safe, positive and structured environment where every student is encouraged to achieve the best possible academic, social and vocational outcomes.
Recognising achievements
It is really important for us to recognise the achievements of our pupils, particularly as they have often come from neglectful academic backgrounds where they have not been praised. We have a number of initiatives in place to regularly celebrate our young people’s social and academic achievements, including:
- Weekly ‘APs & WAMs’ assemblies. These Friday assemblies celebrate students who have been awarded by a teacher for their ‘academic progress’ (APs) and those who have been nominated by their peers as ‘worth a mention’ (WAPs) over the past week, with pupils receiving a certificate for their efforts.
- Termly awards assemblies. These assemblies give pupils a chance to showcase their talents, such as dancing or bands playing, before presenting awards for the most improved young person in various categories, some of which are voted for by staff and others by students.
- Termly open days. At the end of every term we hold an open day where parents are invited to come along, look at their child’s work and talk about their progress.
Moving on from the classroom
We take a holistic approach to education at Sheridan School, focussing not only supporting our students to make academic progress, but also on helping them build their life and independence skills. Every element of the educational experience at Sheridan School is geared towards helping our pupils to develop life, communication and social skills.
