Education Services

Quay View School provides a safe, caring and stimulating learning environment where students pursue interests, life goals and develop the skills they need for their adult lives. We are proud that every young person leaving our school transitions to a positive destination, whether that be further learning or employment.

Many of our children and young people arrive at Quay View School behind in their learning and very wary about returning to school. With our dedicated specialist support, the students turn their lives around, re-engage with learning and with life’s opportunities, developing their confidence and skills for a fulfilling and independent future.

Encouraging a love of learning

Overcoming their barriers to learning opens up the world to our students and gives them control back of their lives. Our focus is on providing a school experience that works for each young person, building their self-esteem, resilience and restoring their love of learning.

Staff build the positive, trusting relationships that make students feel safe and understood at school and prepare them to learn. Our multidisciplinary team undertake a thorough assessment of each child, enabling us to plan a highly personalised package of learning which takes into account their individual needs, strengths and preferences.

Learning experiences are carefully and skilfully designed to be motivating, relevant and rewarding, providing students with opportunities to pursue their interests and aspirations while helping them to progress emotionally, socially and academically. Our holistic approach to learning is underpinned by therapeutically informed best practice and regular reviews of progress against intended outcomes. Our students take ownership of their learning, contributing to the design of their timetable and reviewing their progress with staff.

At Quay View School, young people learn to address the challenges that their complex needs can present, which encourages personal growth. We focus on celebrating successes in a positive, safe and encouraging learning environment.

A broad and balanced curriculum

Every student at Quay View School has the opportunity to study a broad and balanced curriculum, which we personalise so it is relevant and meaningful to them as an individual. As a result, young people become highly engaged and motivated in their learning, progressing academically and achieving accreditation.

We are dedicated to guiding students every step of the way along their learning journey. When they begin their studies, our curriculum concentrates on making a child feel safe in school. From this foundation, we provide learning experiences that develop confidence and fluency in Mathematics and English, and build independent living skills such as money management and personal care.

Students then have the confidence and skills to begin study with an increasing academic focus and we offer a wide range of subjects. We are proud that every young person at Quay View School achieves accreditation and then has opportunities to study for qualifications, including GCSEs, ASDAN and A Levels.

“Leaders plan a programme of careers guidance, for all pupils and tailored towards the curriculum, that includes themes such as the ‘world of work’, as well as periods of work experience for older pupils. This guidance helps to prepare pupils well for their next steps in education, employment or training.”

Quay View School Ofsted Report

Guiding young people to positive transitions

Building the skills for an independent life is an integral part of each student’s education at Quay View. From the start of their time at our school, children follow our independent living skills curriculum which prepares them for adult life. The school has strong links with the local community and provides opportunities for students to learn off-site in safe and comfortable ways that build confidence and broaden horizons.

Our ‘World of Work’ curriculum guides young people to explore jobs and careers, clearly linking their educational attainment to ambitions for the future. There are regular opportunities for work experience, alongside visits to colleges, skills fairs, local employers and higher education institutions. Students benefit from a dedicated careers advisor to support their decision making for the next step after school.

We are committed to supporting every student to make a positive transition from Quay View and proud that all young people move on to further or higher education, training, apprenticeships or employment. We are methodical and thorough in supporting this next step, taking care to ensure arrangements are stable and appropriate, including arranging supported or assisted living where there is an identified need.

Support for families to achieve the best outcomes

From day one of your child’s journey with Quay View, our school will be there for your family. We are proud not only of the quality of relationships we build with our students, but also the strong connections we have with parent carers. We have a dedicated Family Liaison Officer to give advice and guidance and address any issues or concerns you may have with your child’s learning or support.

We know that parents are the experts on their child and by working together we can ensure each student reaches their potential. Daily contact is available with school staff members and regular feedback is given about each child’s progress, with consultation on next steps.
