Everything about our school is designed to support young people to reach their potential. Classes are much smaller than even other specialist schools, with typically no more than four pupils. This means that students have substantial time with staff members, who are able to provide the more intensive support that helps them to quickly make significant progress. The school has high staff to student ratios and a minimum of one staff member for every two pupils.

Our broad and balanced curriculum is designed to challenge and inspire learners, and prepare them for their future. Every child and young person has a bespoke learning package to meet their individual needs which takes into account their specific starting point.

All students, of all abilities, are supported to achieve accreditations. The school has carefully selected curriculum pathways ranging from pre-entry level courses through to GCSEs, to meet their varying needs. By providing opportunities to achieve and succeed, we build young peoples’ confidence. Our aim is that on leaving Kingsbrook School, students will continue with their education with a new found enthusiasm and resilience. The school is affiliated to local mainstream colleges, opening up more options for further learning.

We take a holistic approach to learning and the therapy is carefully integrated into the personalised support package each student receives. This enables young people to develop emotional literacy and social awareness, as well as progressing academically. Students learn to understand their emotions, to become more resilient, and to communicate and interact well with others. They are actively involved in identifying the behaviour they wish to develop or change, and the progress they make helps them to regain control of their lives.

Kingsbrook is a therapeutic school and we provide daily opportunities for students to put into the practice the skills they have learned in their therapy sessions, so that these become second nature and a part of everyday life.

We are committed to empowering our students to develop socially and emotionally, guiding them to build the skills and character for positive transitions to further learning or employment. From the very start of their journey with us, we focus on developing life skills, placing a strong emphasis on teamwork, communication and interacting well with others.

Our new post-16 facility supports students to develop their independent living skills. The hub comprises a classroom, kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom, enabling all aspects of independent living such as cooking, cleaning and laundry to be learned.

Students follow the ASDAN ‘Towards Independence’ programme which accredits them for their new skills. All other aspects of the curriculum are included within the post-16 programme to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum is maintained. Literacy and numeracy skills are developed further, again with a focus upon transferable skills for adulthood such as money management.

Work experience opportunities are provided on-site and off-site, and students receive regular independent careers guidance. We are methodical and thorough in supporting our students to make constructive next steps after school, ensuring they move on to stable and sustainable placements in education or employment.

The school builds effective relationships with parents and carers, who can play an important role in supporting their child’s education and development. Where appropriate, we will identify and work with others who provide the supportive role to the student, such as social workers. Communication is regular and open, providing daily progress updates, as well as consulting on next steps in their education and care.
