Community education

We actively encourage our students to get involved with community-based activities as we feel this helps with:

  • Personal development
  • Integrating with society
  • Learning to become valuable members of society
  • Familiarising them with the types of facility they may use after leaving Hurworth House School

We offer our young people a range of opportunities to take part in community-based activities and schemes where they can socialise with the general public and give back to others, including:

  • Charity events
    • We run a number of charity fundraising events throughout the year for various charities
  • Mentoring scheme
    • Sixth form students have the opportunity to take part in our mentoring scheme where they help younger students
  • Accessing community facilities
    • Students are encouraged to use sporting amenities in the local area
    • We support young people to take part in local clubs or societies (e.g. Cadets)
  • Community project programme
    • This school-run programme sees students make a positive contribution to the school and/or wider community (e.g. gardening, litter collecting, cleaning graffiti, decorating the sixth form area)
  • Voluntary work
    • Students undertake voluntary/community-based work as part of the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince’s Trust award schemes
    • We have partnerships with a local café and hairdressers where students can do work experience
  • School events
    • Our annual summer BBQ brings together the whole community, including the parish council, neighbours, commissioners, SENs and parents
