Activities and facilities

Hurworth House School is committed to providing a learning environment which supports our young people to reach their potential. In addition to expert teaching and therapy services, we have also given careful consideration to the school environment itself to ensure it is a place which works for our students and is responsive to their sensory needs. Standout features include:

  • Therapeutic facilities
    • Our state-of-the-art sensory room has a variety of specialist equipment
    • We have two intervention rooms for transitions and 1:1 work
    • Separate room for educational psychology sessions
  • Carefully planned school layout
    • Each Key Stage group has its own area of the school to minimise potentially difficult transitions during the school day
    • A fob system on doors between main areas of the building prevents the school from becoming too busy or chaotic and so help pupils with anxiety issues
    • A dedicated sixth form area gives older students more independence
  • Specialist teaching facilities
    • We have a large ICT suite, DT workshop, art studio, food technology kitchen, music room and science laboratory
    • ‘The Hub’ classroom is specially designed for students with autism
  • A low stimulus environment
    • We have a quiet garden area with picnic facilities
    • Lunch is split between two sittings to help those with anxiety issues by ensuring the dining hall does not become crowded during mealtimes
