Curriculum information

Each young person has a personalised timetable which includes time for learning and a range of creative, recreational and therapeutic activities. School lessons form part of a daily ward programme alongside therapy sessions and group sessions led by the ward staff and MDT. 

The ‘Return to Learn’ curriculum

On admission to the adolescent ward at Priory Hospital Chelmsford, all students are admitted to the school roll and inducted gradually into the school. There is a specific themed curriculum which is followed with the aim of integrating all young people by building on communication, confidence, self-esteem and redeveloping engagement in learning.

The home school /college curriculum

A young person’s home school curriculum is our first choice for teaching and learning. Our aim is for no young person to fall behind whilst in hospital. This means tutoring our young people through work supplied by the home school or college for each of their subjects and courses, including preparation for examinations.

We make sure that each young person’s learning needs are met by:

  • Providing a Key Tutor to support the student during their admission
  • Making early contact with the home school/college for all admissions and ensuring we are aware of all prior achievement and important educational information
  • Making sure work is supplied without delay from the home school/college
  • Ensuring that we manage all learning set by the home school so it is not overwhelming for the young person
  • Ensuring that we have thoroughly planned to support the learning set for each young person, that we assess their progress, and give tuition and feedback of the highest standard
  • Maintaining excellent communication between ourselves, the young person and the home school/college

The Priory Hospital School curriculum

Our own curriculum is used in combination with the home school/college curriculum, particularly for young people who remain in hospital for longer periods. It can also be used to provide a learning programme for those young people who are NEET.

All our young people at all key stages study the following:

  • World studies (this is spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning)
  • Careers & skills (planning for next steps in education, training and employment)

In addition, we offer the following courses which are taught in combination with the Home School curriculum.

Key Stage 3

The compulsory subjects are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • ICT & enterprise
  • Creative and expressive arts   
  • World studies
  • Careers & skills
  • A physical education programme

We also offer the Edexcel Project Qualification (FPQ / PQ) at Levels 1 and 2 for pupils to focus on a specific academic project tutored by our teachers. 

Key Stage 4

Students will be supported in study leading to external qualifications, directed by their home-school option choices. Compulsory subjects are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • ICT
  • World studies
  • Economic wellbeing
  • Careers & skills
  • Psychology
  • A physical education programme

We also offer the Edexcel Project Qualification (FPQ / PQ) at Levels 1 and 2 for pupils to focus on a specific academic project tutored by our teachers. 

Post-16

Students will be supported in study leading to external qualifications, directed by their home school/college option choices.

We offer support tutoring for re-sit English and Maths GCSE. The compulsory subjects are:

  • World studies
  • Economic wellbeing
  • Careers
  • Psychology
  • A physical education programme

We also offer an Edexcel Extended Project Qualification (FPQ/PQ/EPQ) at Levels 1, 2 or 3 for pupils to focus on a specific academic project, tutored by our teachers. 

We will support students at all levels of ability, from pre-entry levels to those who begin GCSE study at the start of year 9 or earlier.

If a young person at Post-16 is between courses or changing direction, we will support courses of their choice, catch up, transition planning and the development of work related skills.
