Employability and employment

Proven success in preparing young people for adulthood

All Aspris Education schools and colleges have an outstanding track record in preparing young people to re-engage with the community and become successful citizens.

A focus on employment outcomes

We support young people to achieve their aspirations through delivering programmes with a clear focus on employability and employment outcomes. Whether a student is looking to move on to supported voluntary work or study at university, every placement at our schools and colleges supports these aims through the three core areas of life skills, qualifications and confidence.

Building independence skills to support employability

Many of our students benefit from an independence programme with individual targets that help develop their skills and experience so their ‘next step’ is easier to achieve. Independence programmes typically involve:

  • Careers sessions, including interview skills
  • Cooking skills
  • Other independent living skills
  • Keeping safe in the community
  • Money and budgetary skills
  • Self-help skills
  • Social skills through organised events
  • Travel training

Tailored work experience programmes

From Year 10 onwards, students have the opportunity to complete either a short, long or taster work placement. Our schools and colleges take great care to match placements from our ever-growing network of employers with the young person’s skills and interests. Young people have previously undertaken work experience across a wide range of industries, including:

  • Animal care
  • Catering
  • Florists
  • Hospitality
  • NHS
  • Media
  • Nurseries
  • Office work
  • Aspris schools/colleges
  • Retail
  • Riding stables
  • Warehousing

Supporting successful placements

To maximise the chances of a successful work placement, we ensure support is available at every step for students. This may involve:

Pre-placement

  • Careers profiling assessments to help identify the best-suited type of placement
  • Supporting pupils to look at the employment and career options available to them
  • Empowering students to make informed choices about their own plans

Securing a placement

  • Identifying and arranging suitable work placements in line with the student’s interests
  • Accompanying learners to interviews
  • Job search skills programmes (including CV writing, job applications, interview skills, etc.)

During the placement

  • Access to work coaches and 1:1 work-based support
  • Providing independent travel training to those who require it
  • Varying the frequency and duration of the placement to meet individual needs
  • Support with completing a qualification associated to the placement 

Enrichment options

We offer a broad range of enrichment opportunities which students can take part in alongside their chosen course. These provide fun and enjoyable ways to develop key skills, such as team work and communication skills, and include:

  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Prince’s Trust Award
  • Running a community café
  • Running a community hairdressers
  • Running a weather station
  • Writing, designing and distributing school newsletters
  • Young Enterprise Scheme
