Education Services

During the current pandemic Priory Queenswood School has remained open to pupils who choose to attend. We have adapted our curriculum to ensure that every pupil gets the best quality provision possible to suit their needs, while ensuring appropriate Covid measures to mitigate risk of infection.

We are running a blended learning curriculum which provides on-site lessons and therapies as well as remote learning days working from home for those pupils who choose not to attend.

According to the pupils’ individual needs:

  • Daily or weekly contact from support staff, therapists and tutors
  • Work packs delivered and collected from home
  • Assessment and feedback on work completed from home
  • Counselling (in person, by interactive platform or by telephone)
  • Online learning platforms for My Maths (Maths), Lexxia core 5 (English) and CASCAID (Careers)
  • Monitoring and reviewing of PEP’s, EHCP’s and IEP’s through virtual meetings
  • Liaising with multi agency teams to ensure that most vulnerable pupils are safeguarded and that additional support is in place

We continually assess the effectiveness of the blended learning provided, working closely with families and multi-agency teams to find the best fit for each individual pupil.

Learning tailored to the individual

At Queenswood School, we aim to re-engage students with learning, making this personally meaningful by connecting it to a child’s hopes and ambitions for life. We prepare our young people for a brighter future by supporting them to achieve academically, build independence and understand and manage their behaviour.

Each pupil receives a highly personalised education, based on a broad and balanced curriculum, with opportunities for vocational learning. We get to know and understand every young person, identifying their strengths, preferences and goals for the future. Then we put together a plan for achieving their aspirations, working in partnership with students and those who support them.

Young people at Queenswood School have the opportunity to study for a wide range of qualifications including GCSEs, AQA Unit Award Scheme, ASDAN, the Prince's Trust Level 1 Achieve program and vocational accreditations. Many are supported to access college courses or undertake voluntary work in their local communities, as steps towards achieving their ambitions.

Encouraging a love of learning

Our focus at Queenswood School is on helping our pupils to progress from learning to learn, to feeling ready to learn, then inspired and self-motivated to learn. A traditional or mainstream educational approach does not meet the needs of our young people so our school environment, teaching and support is specially adapted and very different.

Queenswood School’s curriculum has a practical, real world emphasis as many of our students struggle to be in the classroom for long periods and to engage with wholly theoretical learning. The school has three faculties: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; Life Skills and Active Living and Expressive Arts. We deliver a broad range of enrichment activities outdoors and off-site, such as art, electronics, kayaking and our forest school, which provide positive life experiences and make learning accessible and enjoyable.

“My son is 11 years old and is attending Queenswood School full time. During his time in Queenswood he has enjoyed going and being there, the staff are brilliant with him and take the time to get to know him and understand him. He has built a good relationship with members of staff and often comes home happy telling me about his day. I am extremely grateful and happy with Queenswood School. Thank you to all the staff for your hard work, patience and understanding.”

Intensive support and nurturing relationships

Young people learn in a positive and nurturing environment, where they are supported to address their mental health difficulties and overcome the barriers that these can present. The school follows a relational model, creating meaningful relationships with every pupil so they can trust that we will always act in their best interests. Staff get to know each young person and their specific needs extremely well. They build safe, consistent, trusting connections with pupils that improve wellbeing and encourage positive change and reengagement with life.

The school promotes social independence, encouraging young people to recognise their value and build healthy relationships. Pupils are supported to manage themselves effectively which helps to create a safe, calm and positive environment for learning.

Queenswood’s bespoke ‘willingness to learn’ model recognises that pupils may be at different stages with regards to their capacity to learn and provides the appropriate support they need. Every pupil at the school is assigned a learning mentor, who supports their personal development, with the aim of encouraging a desire to learn.

The entire school staff team follows a therapeutic framework, providing intensive care and support and encouraging learning through consistent approaches, structures and routines.
