Headteacher’s Welcome to Coxlease School

Welcome to the home of Coxlease School, a specialist independent school for pupils who have social, emotional and mental health needs, autism spectrum conditions, social communication difficulties and associated learning difficulties.

We are dedicated to ensuring that every child is valued throughout their journey with us, and we offer a curriculum package that is founded upon a therapeutic approach, broad in subject choices and rich in vocational opportunities.

Our pupils travel to school from a variety of locations, so we are committed to nurturing a strong community feel and providing opportunities to explore and enjoy everything that the New Forest and surrounding areas has to offer.

We work closely with pupils, parents and other agencies to ensure that every child achieves their potential in both social development and academic progress, and I would personally welcome any calls if you have any questions or require any further information about the school.

School Ethos and Vision

Coxlease School will always see potential and dedicate ourselves to delivering positive change for children. We support young people to achieve their aspirations, no matter what their challenges may be. We believe that every young person deserves the right care, support and education that equips them for a brighter future.

Wherever a child’s potential lies, we will commit ourselves to being the difference, which helps them to achieve their goals. With an unwavering focus on achieving the very best outcomes, we empower young people to fulfil their own unique potential.

Statement of Intent

To provide a holistic, individualised and experienced based curriculum, enabling pupils to upskill to the next steps of their education and be successful members of society.

School Goals

  • Quality of Education - Our curriculum, built upon therapeutic foundations, allows students to build confidence, gain new experiences and achieve academically
  • Behaviour and Attitudes - Our inclusive school community celebrates differences, diversity and wellbeing for all
  • Personal Development - Opportunities, both in the visible and hidden curriculum, give pupils the opportunities to enjoy rich and exciting experiences and grow and develop socially
  • Leadership and Management - Our leadership ensures that staff are well supported so that the expectations of pupils can be realised
Coxlease School is an independent specialist day school, which was awarded ‘Good’ overall and 'Outstanding' for 'behaviour and attitudes', 'Personal development' and 'Sixth-form provision' by Ofsted in January 2022. Located near Lyndhurst, Hampshire, Coxlease School enjoys a beautiful setting in the heart of the New Forest.

The school is well situated for easy access across to many areas of southern England and the Midlands, being close to the M27, A34 and M3. London can be reached in approximately two hours by car or in one and a half hours by train.

We are proud of our excellent reputation for providing highly effective education, care, therapy, welfare and support for up to 107 pupils aged 5 to 19 years old who have difficulties regulating their emotional, social and mental health needs. They may also have other complex needs often associated with autistic spectrum conditions.

We take an individual and inclusive approach to education, care, therapy and healthcare in order to provide our young people with the opportunity to make positive changes in their lives, develop as lifelong learners and integrate into the wider community. Coxlease School offers a stable and caring environment which, when combined with our high staff to pupil ratios, ensures that every pupil has the opportunity to develop their abilities, share new experiences and reach their full potential.

For older pupils, we have two Post-16 learning provisions called ‘The Hub’ and ‘The Skills Centre'. These operate in addition to the main school site and provide education and vocational training for up to 20 young people.

The Coxlease provision also incorporates seven separate Ofsted registered children’s homes for young people between 5 and 16 years of age and one CQC registered semi-independent home for young people aged 16 to 25 years. The homes are based in rural and urban locations in the New Forest and Southampton. These young people usually attend Coxlease School. We welcome residential pupils on weekly and termly boarding placements for up to 52 weeks per year, depending on individual need.

"Pupils thrive at Coxlease School. Adults understand pupils’ needs exceptionally well.”
